KEY INFORMATION

DAY 1 – Arrival in Ridder

International arrival at Almaty Airport (ALA), domestic flight connection to Öskemen Airport (UKK), and transfer to Ridder. First overnight at the Ridder mountain hut.

DAY 2 - First Day of Cat Skiing

After breakfast, we head out for our first day of cat-assisted skiing in the mountains above Ridder. The snowcat will take us deep into the backcountry, climbing steadily toward the upper zones. We’ll ride up comfortably in the snowcat’s heated cabin, carrying only the backpacks; the skis and boards will travel in the gear basket. This first day is all about finding your rhythm, getting a feel for the terrain, warming up your legs, and taking in the raw beauty of the Kazakh mountains. But make no mistake: it’s still a full powder day, and if conditions are perfect, we’ll start pushing right from the very first run. Overnight at the hut.

DAY 3-6 – Cat Skiing

Four full days of pure cat-skiing in the heart of the Altai Mountains. Each morning, we’ll climb comfortably in the snowcat’s heated cabin to reach untouched alpine terrain, ready for long, flowing descents in deep powder. Our guides will select the best lines each day based on snow and weather, balancing open fields, mellow tree runs, and steeper alpine faces. After every run, the snowcat will be waiting to take us back up for another lap. Several ski zones surround Ridder, and if conditions call for it, we’ll move between huts and areas to chase the best snow.
Overnight at the hut.

DAY 7 –  Return to Almaty

Transfer to Öskemen Airport, then departure to Almaty, Upon arrival, enjoy some free time to explore the city at your own pace.
Overnight in Almaty hotel.

DAY 8 – Departure

Transfer to Almaty Airport (not included) for your return flight home.

Fly into Almaty International Airport (ALA), Kazakhstan — easily accessible via connecting flights from major European cities and several Middle Eastern airlines. Intermediate

This trip is designed for intermediate skiers and snowboarders comfortable riding offpiste in deep powder for 3000 vertical meters per day for several consecutive days. Good fitness, avalanche awareness, and prior freeride experience are essential.

December to late March marks the prime powder season in Ridder, Kazakhstan. Consistent snowfall and cold temperatures create perfect conditions for deep turns and smooth descents. Skiing takes place between 1,500 and 2,200 meters, surrounded by endless birch forests and untouched alpine terrain. Days are crisp and cold, with temperatures often below freezing, keeping the snow light and dry. While most days bring calm mountain air and clear skies, weather in the Altai can shift quickly, delivering fresh powder in just a few hours. Layering properly is key to staying warm and comfortable during long days of riding. This is cat skiing at its purest: silent forests, endless lines, and snow that stays cold and dry when everywhere else it's already getting wet.

Snowboarding & Skiing

Q: Will I ride off-piste every day?
A: That’s the plan. We aim for 5 days of freeride with snowcats, weather and conditions permitting. Each day, the guide selects the best lines based on safety and snow quality

Q: What kind of riding is this?
A: This is mechanical-powered freeride. You’ll ride up the hill in the warmth of a snowcat, then ride down untracked lines, several times each day. You need prior freeride experience and good fitness: if you know how to ride deep powder, this trip is for you.

Q: What if I’ve never skied in deep powder before?
A: Unfortunately, this trip isn’t suitable for beginners. You need to be comfortable with off-piste terrain, avalanche gear, and long days in the backcountry. But if you're new to freeride, get in touch: we may be able to recommend an intro-level trip or a prep course.

Q: How many people per group?
A: Maximum 9 guests, plus our Esploro Travel team leader, per departure, ensuring personal attention, safer terrain management, and a more intimate group dynamic.

Q: Do I need avalanche training?
A: Prior avalanche education (like an AIARE 1 or equivalent) is recommended, but not mandatory. What isrequired: respect for the mountains.

Q: Will I be cold?
A: It’s Central Asia in winter, so yes, it can get pretty cold. But with the right gear, you’ll stay warm and comfortable. In Ridder, temperatures typically range from –5 °C to –15 °C, with windchill making it feel even colder at times. Make sure to bring technical base layers, a waterproof outer shell, and warm gloves and hats. A complete gear list will be provided after booking.

Weather

Q: What’s the weather like?
A: Expect full-on Central Asian spring conditions: snow-covered glaciers, jagged peaks, and thin, crisp air at altitude. Days are long enough for extended tours, but rapid weather shifts and high-mountain winds are always possible. Layering is key.

Gear & Preparation

Q: What gear do I need?
A: You must bring your own freeride setup: skis (width of 105mm minimum) or snowboard (directional tapered shape), and avalanche safety gear (beacon, shovel, probe). Also pack base layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves, hat, goggles, and a 15-20L backpack. A full checklist will be provided.

Q: Can I rent gear?
A: Yes, a limited amount of rental gear may be available in Ridder. Let us know well in advance if you need anything.

Q: What fitness level is required?
A: You need to be in good shape, comfortable with a full day of freeride. You will need the same endurance needed for a full day of freeride with lifts.

Travel & Logistics

Q: How do I get to Tuyuk Su?
A: The nearest international airport is Almaty (ALA), well connected with major European and Asian hubs. From Almaty, you’ll take a domestic flight to Ust-Kamenogorsk (UKK), followed by a 2-hour transfer by van to Ridder.

Q: Do I need travel insurance?
A: Yes. You must have comprehensive travel insurance that covers ski touring, remote activities, and trip cancellation.

Q: What about visas?
A: Many nationalities, including EU citizens, can enter Kazakhstan visa-free for short stays. However, requirements vary by passport, so always check the latest regulations with your local Kazakh embassy or consulate.
