YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE

A raw, self-driven photo safari through the predator heartland of Southern Africa.
This is not a typical lodge-based tour. It’s an immersive photographic adventure deep in the Kalahari, where you’ll track black-maned lions, cheetahs, and leopards in one of Africa’s wildest parks. Traveling in rooftop-tent 4x4s, we’ll sleep in remote, unfenced campsites, wake to the call of jackals, and follow the golden light through red dunes and dry riverbeds. With Paolo Sartori’s expert guidance in the field and a maximum of six participants, you’ll refine your camera skills, learn to anticipate behavior, and come home with powerful wildlife images—and the confidence to lead your own self-drive adventures in the future.

KEY INFORMATION

DAY 1 – Arrival & Drive into the Wild

Arrival at Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport (latest landing time: 08:30am). After a quick stop in Windhoek for supplies, we begin the 5 hours journey south to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park. We’ll cross into South Africa at Mata Mata, set up our first camp, and unwind after the long drive with a sunset beer and the first sounds of the Kalahari.

DAY 2 – Mata Mata: First Encounters

Morning and afternoon game drives in the red sand dunes and riverbeds around Mata Mata. This area is known for giraffes, bat-eared foxes, and the possibility of early predator sightings. Back at camp, we’ll begin our first review session and prep for the days ahead.

DAY 3-4 – Twee Rivieren: Shifting Light, Shifting Tracks

We move southeast to Twee Rivieren, exploring a different ecosystem with acacia groves, sandy roads and open riverbeds. Expect cheetah tracks, black-backed jackals and spectacular raptor sightings. Two game drives per day, 4 hours each, will provide plenty of time for sightings, with time during the heat of the day for relax, technique improvement and image review.

DAY 5-6-7 – Nossob: Predator Country

Deep in the Kalahari, Nossob is a remote and iconic camp surrounded by lion territory. These are our most wild days. We’ll chase good light, track the big cats and refine your storytelling both in the field and around the campfire.

DAY 8 – Northbound: The Journey Back

A final game drive in Nossob before making our way back with a longer drive through the park, arriving at Mata Mata in the late afternoon. We’ll share a final wild night under the stars and prepare for reentry into the “real world.”

DAY 9 – From Sand to City

After one last sunrise safari session in the Kalahari, we exit the park and return to Windhoek with approx 5 hours drive. We’ll stay in a comfortable hotel and enjoy a good shower, real bed, and some well-earned rest.

DAY 10 – Recap or Explore

Depending on the group’s mood and energy, we’ll either dive into a full photo review and editing session, or enjoy a relaxed tour of Windhoek’s most interesting corners. In the afternoon, we’ll transfer to the airport for your international flight home—bringing back not only images, but real stories and wild memories.

You’ll fly into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek, Namibia and we pick you up there. If you are traveling from different time zones or landing later than 8.30 AM, we recommend flying to Windhoek one day prior.

Easy to Moderate

No strenuous activity is required and we’ll mostly shoot from inside our vehicles, but participants must be comfortable with camping in remote areas, handling heat (up to 40°C at midday, with evenings/mornings being cooler and more pleasant), and contributing to camp life, like setting up tents, helping with meals, and managing gear in rugged conditions.
Open to all levels of photography expertise, from curious beginners to experienced photographers seeking a more raw and immersive adventure. This trip focuses on developing storytelling skills, adapting to real-world wildlife situations and growing confidence in remote conditions.

May marks the beginning of the dry season in the Kalahari: a fantastic time for photography and wildlife tracking. Expect warm, sunny days with temperatures ranging between 24–30 °C (75–86 °F). However, nights can get cold, especially when sleeping in rooftop tents. Temperatures often drop below 10 °C (50 °F) and can approach freezing in exposed areas. Rain is extremely rare this time of year, and the skies are usually clear: perfect for stargazing and shooting at sunrise, sunset, or under the Milky Way.

Clothing & Footwear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for hot and dry desert conditions
  • Warm layer (fleece and light down jacket) for cool mornings and evenings
  • Light long-sleeve shirts and trousers for sun protection and to guard against dust and insects
  • Sturdy walking/hiking shoes with good grip for dunes, rocky terrain, and desert hikes
  • Comfortable sandals or flip-flops for downtime
  • Hat and sunglasses for sun protection, especially during desert excursions

Gear & Accessories

  • Sunscreen (high SPF, water-resistant)
  • Hat & sunglasses
  • Headlamp (useful for early morning or evening desert walks, with spare batteries)
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Insect repellent
  • Personal toiletries (wet wipes are useful in remote camps without showers)
  • Compact towel

Travel Essentials

  • Travel insurance covering 4x4 driving and wildlife activities
  • Power plug adapter for Namibia (Type D / Type M sockets, 220–240 V)
  • Power bank for charging devices on long drives and remote areas

Photography Equipment

  • Camera body (DSLR or mirrorless, manual settings required)
  • Lenses:
    - Wide angle (15–35mm or 24–70mm) for landscapes
    - Telephoto zoom (70–200mm, 100–400mm, or 200–600mm) for wildlife
    - Fast wide-angle prime (20mm or 24mm f/1.4–f/2.8) for astrophotography
    - Optional: Prime telephoto (400mm–600mm)
  • Circular polarizer filter
  • Solid tripod (preferably with a leveling base)
  • Extra batteries and memory cards (enough for full days without recharge)

Computer & Backup

  • Laptop with Adobe Lightroom or CaptureOne
  • External hard drive (SSD or portable HDD) for backup
  • Card reader and cables

Photography & Learning

Q: What will I learn?
A: You’ll build your skills in wildlife, behavior-based shooting, and desert storytelling. Expect hands-on guidance on camera settings for fast-moving predators, vehicle positioning, light-reading, creative composition, and camp-life storytelling. Optional editing sessions will also be offered (Lightroom, workflow, backup strategies, etc.).

Q: Will there be one-on-one feedback?
A: Yes. With a maximum of 6 participants and a 3:1 guest-to-guide ratio, you’ll get personal feedback daily from in-the-field advice to evening photo reviews.

Q: What gear should I bring?
A: We recommend a DSLR or mirrorless camera, a range of lenses (wide-angle, telephoto, and ideally a fast prime for night shots), a sturdy tripod, extra batteries and cards, and a laptop for editing. (See full checklist above.)

Wildlife & Destinations

Q: What kind of wildlife will we see?
A: The Kgalagadi is one of Southern Africa’s top predator hotspots. Expect black-maned lions, cheetahs, oryx, jackals, springbok, raptors, bat-eared foxes, and possibly leopards, brown hyenas, and caracals. While sightings are never guaranteed, our timing and local knowledge give us the best chances.

Q: What regions will we visit?
A: We’ll explore the southern and central regions of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, including the famed Nossob and Auob riverbeds and nearby dune systems, areas known for high predator density and photographic potential.

Q: What makes this location so special?
A: Unlike crowded reserves, the Kgalagadi offers raw, remote, and predator-rich encounters. The red dunes, dry pans, and golden grasslands create stunning backdrops, especially in the dramatic light of the early dry season.

Accommodation & Comfort

Q: What’s the camping setup like?
A: We’ll sleep in spacious rooftop tents (shared, two people per vehicle), set up each evening in remote, unfenced campsites inside the park. Nights are quiet, wild, and star-filled, with the occasional call of jackals or lions.

Q: Is it physically demanding?
A: No hikes or physically intense activities are planned. You should be comfortable with long drives, sitting in a vehicle with your gear, and participating in basic camp duties. If you enjoy adventure, you’ll love this.

Q: Will I have access to Wi-Fi or charging points?
A: There’s no Wi-Fi inside the park and mobile reception is limited. Charging will be possible in the vehicles during drives, but bring power banks and spare batteries for full autonomy.

Q: Will I share a tent or vehicle?
A: Yes, this is a shared experience. Two participants per rooftop tent and per 4x4 vehicle (3 guests per car total). A single room supplement may be available upon request for Windhoek accommodation only.

Travel & Logistics

Q: How do I get to the starting point?
A: The trip begins and ends in Windhoek, Namibia. You’ll fly into Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH). Airport pickup and drop-off are included. If you plan to arrive early, we can help with accommodation and transfers.

Q: Do I need a visa for Namibia and South Africa?
A: Most nationalities can get a Visa on Arrival at the airport or apply online in advance. Check your country’s requirements before departure.

Q: Do I need travel insurance?
A: Yes, it’s mandatory. Your policy must cover medical emergencies, evacuation, and activities like 4x4 off-road travel and wildlife photography

Food & Special Requirements

Q: Are meals included?
A: Meals while in the park are included. That means: breakfast, light lunch, and dinner from the evening of Day 1 to lunch on Day 9. Camp meals are hearty, simple, and satisfying: expect BBQs, stews, and fresh produce where available.

Q: Can dietary needs be accommodated?
A: Vegetarian options are available, but please inform us in advance. Vegan or special diets may be limited in remote areas, so we recommend bringing specific snacks if needed.

Q: Are drinks and snacks included?
A: Water, tea, coffee, and basic snacks are provided during drives. Alcohol and soft drinks are not included but can be purchased before entering the park.

Before & After the Trip

Q: Can I arrive early or extend my trip?
A: Absolutely. If you wish to explore more of Namibia or South Africa before or after the workshop, we’re happy to assist with logistics, bookings, and recommendations.

Q: Will there be a group chat or shared folder?
A: Yes! We’ll create a private WhatsApp group for pre-trip coordination and updates, as well as a post-trip space to share edits and keep in touch.
