Scorpion Bay: 2026 Could Be a Special Year

When Scorpion Bay turns on, it produces some of the longest rides on the planet. On the right day, a wave can connect point after point and run for over a minute, peeling down a coast of cobblestone and sand until your legs give out before the wave does.

But "the right day" is the whole story. Scorpion Bay does not work on just any swell, and understanding why (where these waves are born, how they travel, and what makes one season better than another) is the difference between turning up and getting lucky, and turning up when the odds are stacked in your favour. This year, those odds look unusually good. Here is why.

Where Scorpion Bay's waves come from

Scorpion Bay sits on the Pacific side of the Baja California peninsula, near the village of San Juanico, and it faces broadly south and southwest. That orientation is everything. The bay is sheltered from the cold, wind-driven swells that hammer the open Baja coast and is instead exposed to long-period energy arriving from the south: the kind of clean, organised swell that wraps into a point and reels rather than closes out.

A series of points run down the bay, each picking up the swell at a slightly different angle and breaking on a slightly different tide. When a solid south swell arrives and the sand is in the right place, the outer sections link to the inner ones and the whole bay starts to fire. The waves that make Scorpion Bay famous are not big, heavy, or hollow by reputation; they are long, and length is a function of swell direction and period far more than raw size.

How a Scorpion Bay swell is born

If the season runs from May to November, why do experienced surfers circle the back end of it?

Because the ocean is warmest in late summer and early autumn, and warm water is the fuel that tropical systems burn. As sea surface temperatures peak around September and October, eastern Pacific storms tend to grow stronger, last longer, and generate longer-period swell: the exact ingredients that travel best and break cleanest at a point break. Early October sits right in that sweet spot: the water is warm, the season is mature, and the storms have the energy to send swell that holds its shape all the way to the bay. It is one of the most promising windows of the entire year.

Why October is prime time

The south swells that light up Scorpion Bay come from two main engines, and in late summer and autumn one of them dominates: tropical storms and hurricanes in the eastern Pacific.

Every year, from roughly mid-May to the end of November, the eastern Pacific spins up tropical systems off the coast of Mexico and Central America. These storms generally track from south to north, staying offshore, well away from the Baja coastline. They rarely bring bad weather to the points; instead, when a storm has the right combination of strength, fetch, and angle, it fires long-period swell up the coast toward Baja. Those lines travel hundreds of miles across open water, organising and cleaning up as they go, and arrive at Scorpion Bay as the groomed south swell the bay is built for.

The honest caveat: not every hurricane delivers. Plenty of eastern Pacific storms track too far west, or sit at the wrong angle, and send their energy off into the open ocean instead of up the coast. A useful swell needs a storm that is strong enough to generate real period, positioned so its energy points into the bay's window. When all of that lines up, Scorpion Bay rewards you. That is simply the nature of chasing tropical swell. And it is exactly why the number of storms in a season matters so much.

El Niño is back, and it's a big one

The name goes back centuries. Peruvian fishermen noticed that every few years, around Christmas, the anchovies in the equatorial Pacific would simply vanish: the cool, fish-rich water replaced by something warmer. They named the event after the Christ child, el niño, and the name stuck. Today El Niño describes a recurring climate pattern that begins with a shift in Pacific winds and a band of warmer-than-average water spreading across the equatorial ocean, with consequences that ripple through weather systems around the world.

If the forecasts hold, 2026 won't just be a strong El Niño year: for the points of Scorpion Bay, it could be a historic one.

This year, it's official. NOAA has confirmed that a new El Niño has begun, and the forecasts are emphatic: sea-surface temperatures are projected to climb more than 2.5°C above the long-run average, possibly approaching 3°C. That would make it the strongest El Niño in the 75 years scientists have kept records, surpassing even the benchmark events of 1982-83, 1997-98 and 2015-16. This is not a wait-and-see season: the pattern has arrived, it is strengthening, and every major model is pointing the same way.

The wider picture is sobering. A strong El Niño redistributes heat and moisture across the planet, and the consequences are rarely kind: drought across southern Africa and the Sahel, the risk of flooding in east Africa, parched crops in Central America and parts of Asia, all on top of an already warming climate that keeps rewriting its own temperature records. For millions of people, a super El Niño is not a curiosity: it's a hard year ahead.

And then there's the surf. It feels almost guilty to admit it against that backdrop, but the same overheated Pacific that drives those droughts is the most productive swell engine a place like Scorpion Bay could ask for. Warmer water, collapsing wind shear, more and stronger storms tracking up the Mexican coast: the exact recipe that sends long-period south swell reeling into the bay. If the forecasts hold, 2026 won't just be a strong El Niño year: for the points of Scorpion Bay, it could be a historic one.

What history tells us

The numbers behind those benchmark years are striking. A typical eastern Pacific season produces around 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes. The Very Strong El Niño seasons blew past that: across 1982, 1997, and 2015, the basin averaged roughly 23 named storms, 12 hurricanes, and 8 majors, well above normal in every category. More storms in the water means more chances for one of them to line up with the bay's swell window.

The standout is 1997. That September, Hurricane Linda exploded to 185 mph, becoming the most intense eastern Pacific hurricane on record at the time (a record later surpassed only by Patricia in 2015). Linda peaked several hundred miles off Baja with a wind field large enough to send serious surf up the coast: 15-to-18-foot faces into Newport Point and 25-foot sets into the Wedge in Southern California. That same season, Hurricane Guillermo reached Category 5 in August, and Nora wrapped a Category 4 peak before making landfall in Baja. Three separate systems, one season, all firing.

Then there was 2015: 26 named storms, 16 hurricanes, and a record 11 major hurricanes, capped by Patricia, the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded in the Western Hemisphere. Seasons like these don't just look good on paper; they put swell after swell into the water for months on end.

None of this means every El Niño storm aims itself at Scorpion Bay. It means the odds of a well-positioned, powerful swell go up sharply when there are this many storms in play. In a quiet year you wait for the one system that works. In a season like the analogs suggest 2026 could be, the bay gets more swings at the plate.

So, is 2026 the year?

It might be. The official forecasts already point to an above-average season, and the El Niño setup, if it strengthens as expected, tilts the whole picture toward more and stronger storms exactly when Scorpion Bay wants them.

But the ocean writes its own script, and no honest forecast promises a perfect swell on a chosen date. What we can say is that the ingredients are rare, and that they are pointing the right way. And there is one more thing working in your favour at Scorpion Bay specifically: with a string of points all exposed slightly differently, you don't need a once-a-decade swell for something to be working. You just need to be there when the season delivers, and 2026 is shaping up to be a season worth being there for.
