Moderate

While the mellow points are great for intermediate surfers, an advanced level is recommended to fully enjoy the long-distance paddling and faster sections of the outer points.

Baja California Sur enjoys a dry, sunny desert climate most of the year with warm air temperatures and limited rainfall. The weather and water conditions vary by season, offering different surfing experiences throughout the year.

Peak season in September brings the warmest air and ocean temperatures of the year, often reaching between 28–35°C. This period marks the peak of the South swell season, delivering the most consistent and long-period waves to the bay. While the desert heat is at its highest, the water is tropical and crystal clear, allowing for marathon sessions in boardshorts or a light rashguard. Small afternoon desert showers are possible, often providing a refreshing break from the intense Baja sun.

Surf & Waves

Q: What kind of waves can we expect at Scorpion Bay?
A: Scorpion Bay is world-famous for its four main points (and three additional outer points) that create some of the longest right-handers on Earth. The waves are generally mechanical, peeling over a soft cobblestone and sand bottom. While the first four points are known for being mellow and perfect for longboarding, the outer points can produce faster, more hollow sections during larger swells.

Q: Is the "longest wave in the world" guaranteed?
A: When a solid South swell hits, it is possible to ride a single wave from the upper points all the way into the village for over a minute. However, surf is a natural phenomenon. We chose the best time of the year to maxime the possibilites of great conditions, but the "infinite ride" depends on specific swell direction and period.

Experience & Gear

Q: How many surf sessions are included each day?
A: We typically organize two main guided sessions per day, timed around the best tide and wind windows. However, because we stay right on the bay, you have the flexibility to paddle out whenever the conditions look best for your style.

Q: Is this trip suitable for beginners?
A: No. While the inside points (1 and 2) are incredibly forgiving and provide the perfect "laboratory" for improving your surfing, you need to be able to ride green waves and to make some turn to join the trip.

Q: Should I bring my own board?
A: Yes, we recommend bringing your own "Baja quiver", typically a longboard, a mid-length, or a high-volume fish. While we have a limited selection of rentals available through local partners, having your own familiar equipment is best for waves this long.

Logistics & Life in San Juanico

Q: How does transportation work during the trip?
A: All logistics are handled by us. This includes the 4x4 desert transfer from La Paz to San Juanico and daily shuttles between the different points of the bay. The roads are rugged, so we use high-clearance vehicles driven by experienced local guides.

Q: Where will we stay?
A: We stay in cozy cabanas in San Juanico. Accommodations are comfortable but rustic, reflecting the off-grid nature of the village. Expect private bathrooms, delicious food, and a disconnect from the digital world, as Wi-Fi and cell service are limited.

Seasonality & Conditions

Q: What is the best time of year for this trip?
A: The South swell season runs from May to September. July and August are the most consistent for size, while September offers the warmest water and the most "tropical" feel, with the highest probability of catching the legendary long-period swells.

Q: What wetsuit should I bring?
A: For a trip in September, the water is very warm (24–27°C), so boardshorts and a rashguard for sun protection are usually enough. In the earlier months (May–June), the water is cooler (19–21°C), and a 2mm shorty or springsuit is recommended.

Preparation & Requirements

Q: Is surf coaching included?
A: Local surf guidance and spot selection are included. While our guides provide safety briefings and lineup tips, dedicated 1-on-1 coaching or video analysis can be arranged as an optional add-on.

Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes. Because San Juanico is a remote location several hours from the nearest major hospital, comprehensive travel insurance that covers "adventure sports" (surfing) and emergency medical evacuation is mandatory.

Extensions

Q: Can this trip be combined with other Baja experiences?
A: Definitely. Many guests choose to combine Scorpion Bay with a visit to the whale shark areas of La Paz or the hiking trails of the Sierra de la Giganta. Let us know if you’d like to build a custom multi-stop Baja expedition.
