YOUR ADVENTURE STARTS HERE

Every summer, tens of thousands of beluga whales gather in the Churchill River estuary, on Hudson Bay, to feed and calve in Arctic waters. Lie flat on a floating mat towed gently behind the zodiac, and let the belugas come to you: curious, unhurried, often close enough to touch. Between sessions, head onto the open tundra by 4x4 in search of polar bears, arctic foxes, and caribou, and take to a kayak or SUP for a quieter encounter with the belugas. Five days built around one of the Arctic's most extraordinary wildlife gatherings.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Four mornings of Beluga Drift, floating face to face with curious Arctic whales.
  • Search the open tundra by 4x4 for polar bears, arctic foxes, and caribou.
  • A private zodiac throughout, shared with no other groups on the water.
  • Paddle among belugas on a dedicated kayaking or SUP afternoon in the estuary.
  • Base yourself in Churchill, on the edge of Hudson Bay and the tundra.

KEY INFORMATION

DAY 1 – Arrival in Churchill

Land in Winnipeg, Canada, and connect onward to Churchill, on the edge of Hudson Bay. A private transfer takes you straight to your hotel, with the rest of the day free to settle in, walk along the water, and meet the rest of the group over an evening briefing with your Esploro Travel team leader.

DAY 2-4 – Beluga Drift & Tundra Safari

Mornings begin at the harbour, where a chartered zodiac carries you out into the estuary in search of the beluga pods gathering there for the summer. Lie on the floating mat and let the whales approach at their own pace, curious and unhurried. Afternoons head the opposite direction: a 4x4 safari across the open tundra, tracking polar bears, arctic foxes, and caribou as they move through the summer landscape, with a local guide reading the terrain.

DAY 5 – Kayaking with Belugas

One final morning of beluga drifting, followed by an afternoon on the water at a slower pace: a kayak or Stand Up Paddle session weaving among the pods, close enough to hear them surface and breathe around you.

DAY 6 – Departure

Transfer to Churchill airport for your flight back to Winnipeg, and onward connections home.

Fly into Winnipeg (YWG), then on to Churchill, a town with no road access, reachable only by air or the classic two-day VIA Rail journey across the sub-Arctic. We're happy to help you choose and book whichever route suits you best, then take care of every transfer once you land.

  • Private transfers on arrival and departure
  • Daily transfers to and from the harbour on beluga days

Easy

Basic swimming ability is required as a safety precaution, though you'll be lying on a floating mat above the water in a drysuit, not swimming yourself. 4x4 safaris and kayaking involve no strenuous exertion, though sitting for extended periods and basic mobility are needed throughout.

From July to August, Churchill sees mild sub-Arctic summer conditions, with daytime highs around 15°C (59°F) and cooler nights near 8°C (46°F). Rain showers are common, and the sea stays cold year-round, around 3-8°C (37-46°F).

In-Water Gear

  • Drysuit, hood, and neoprene gloves (rental available on-site; bring your own if preferred)
  • Mask, snorkel, fins
  • Waterproof drybag for valuables (phone, documents, electronics)

Cold & Weather Protection

  • Warm layers: fleece, insulated jacket, and a windproof outer shell
  • Hat, gloves, and warm socks
  • Waterproof rain jacket (showers are common even in summer)

Travel Essentials

  • Travel insurance covering: cold-water activities, wildlife excursions, boat trips. Highly recommended: medical evacuation/repatriation
  • Power plug/adapter for Type A/B sockets
  • Reusable water bottle

Optional but Useful

  • Underwater camera or action cam
  • Power bank/spare battery
  • Insect repellent (mosquitoes can be active in summer)
  • Personal snacks for full days out

Beluga and Polar Bear Encounters

Q: Will I definitely see belugas?
A: While nothing in nature is ever certain, sightings here are about as close as it gets: tens of thousands of belugas gather in this exact estuary every summer, and our crews rarely need long to find them.

Q: How does Beluga Drift actually work?
A: You lie on a floating platform towed gently behind the zodiac, head and camera at water level. Belugas are naturally curious animals, and they'll often follow the platform on their own, swimming right up alongside you.

Q: What happens if the weather cancels a session?
A: If conditions make it unsafe, the session is rescheduled to another day within the trip. No refund is issued if rescheduling isn't possible.

Q: Will I see polar bears?
A: Summer isn't peak bear season like autumn, but bears are genuinely around: we have regular sightings through July and August, sometimes multiple bears in a single outing. We won't promise it, but it's a real possibility, not a long shot. And even without a bear, the tundra safari brings its own rewards: arctic foxes, caribou, and a rich variety of birdlife.

Logistics

Q: How do I get to Churchill?
A: Fly into Winnipeg (YWG) first, there's no direct international access to Churchill. From there, only one airline serves Churchill, with flights on a limited number of days each week; our trip dates are built specifically around their confirmed departure days, so you won't be stuck waiting for a connection. The alternative is the VIA Rail train, a genuinely memorable two-day journey through the sub-Arctic wilderness of northern Manitoba, with trains running a few times a week in each direction. We're happy to help you choose and book whichever route suits you best.

Q: Do I need a visa for Canada?
A: Most travelers need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) rather than a visa. Please check the latest requirements for your nationality.

Q: How big are the groups?
A: This entire trip is private to your group: up to 5 guests plus your team leader, with no other travelers joining any part of it. On the water, everyone rotates on and off the mat for equal time with the belugas.

Gear & Preparation

Q: Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?
A: Yes: please bring your own mask, fins, and snorkel.

Q: Do I need a drysuit?
A: A drysuit, hood, and gloves are required for Beluga Drift due to the cold water. These aren't included, but rental is available locally.

Q: Is the cold water actually dangerous?
A: Not with the drysuit, which keeps you fully dry and insulated. The real limit is comfort, not safety: most guests find 15-20 minutes on the mat is plenty before wanting to warm up again.

Q: Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
A: Basic swimming ability is required as a safety precaution, though you won't be swimming during the activity itself.

Practicalities

Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes, covering cold-water activities, wildlife excursions, and boat trips. Medical evacuation coverage is also recommended.

Q: Are meals included?
A: Breakfast is provided daily. Lunch and dinner are not included, leaving you free to explore Churchill's restaurants.

Q: Is there internet?
A: Wi-Fi is available at the accommodation. Cellular coverage exists in town itself, but expect it to weaken or disappear once you're out on the water or the tundra.

Other Experiences

Q: Can we add anything extra to this trip?
A: Yes. A half-day on a Tundra Buggy, the specialized vehicle built for close-range bear viewing, or a half-day zodiac charter dedicated to searching for polar bears from the water, can both be arranged as add-ons, surcharge applies.

Q: Can I extend my trip?
A: Yes, our 8-day version adds an extra beluga session, an extra tundra afternoon, and a half-day historic tour.
