Beluga and Polar Bear Encounters
Q: Will I definitely see belugas?
A: While nothing in nature is ever certain, sightings here are about as close as it gets: tens of thousands of belugas gather in this exact estuary every summer, and our crews rarely need long to find them.
Q: How does Beluga Drift actually work?
A: You lie on a floating platform towed gently behind the zodiac, head and camera at water level. Belugas are naturally curious animals, and they'll often follow the platform on their own, swimming right up alongside you.
Q: What happens if the weather cancels a session?
A: If conditions make it unsafe, the session is rescheduled to another day within the trip. No refund is issued if rescheduling isn't possible.
Q: Will I see polar bears?
A: Summer isn't peak bear season like autumn, but bears are genuinely around: we have regular sightings through July and August, sometimes multiple bears in a single outing. We won't promise it, but it's a real possibility, not a long shot. And even without a bear, the tundra safari brings its own rewards: arctic foxes, caribou, and a rich variety of birdlife.
Logistics
Q: How do I get to Churchill?
A: Fly into Winnipeg (YWG) first, there's no direct international access to Churchill. From there, only one airline serves Churchill, with flights on a limited number of days each week; our trip dates are built specifically around their confirmed departure days, so you won't be stuck waiting for a connection. The alternative is the VIA Rail train, a genuinely memorable two-day journey through the sub-Arctic wilderness of northern Manitoba, with trains running a few times a week in each direction. We're happy to help you choose and book whichever route suits you best.
Q: Do I need a visa for Canada?
A: Most travelers need an eTA (Electronic Travel Authorization) rather than a visa. Please check the latest requirements for your nationality.
Q: How big are the groups?
A: This entire trip is private to your group: up to 5 guests plus your team leader, with no other travelers joining any part of it. On the water, everyone rotates on and off the mat for equal time with the belugas.
Q: How does the 8-day trip differ from the 6-day trip?
A: Both trips include beluga boarding, tundra wildlife excursions and kayaking in the estuary. The 8-day trip adds two nights, a fifth beluga boarding session, a fourth 4x4 afternoon and a half-day historic tour. Choose it if you want more time on the water and tundra, with a day to explore Churchill’s history.
Gear & Preparation
Q: Do I need to bring my own snorkeling gear?
A: Yes: please bring your own mask, fins, and snorkel.
Q: Do I need a drysuit?
A: A drysuit, hood, and gloves are required for Beluga Drift due to the cold water. These aren't included, but rental is available locally.
Q: Is the cold water actually dangerous?
A: Not with the drysuit, which keeps you fully dry and insulated. The real limit is comfort, not safety: most guests find 15-20 minutes on the mat is plenty before wanting to warm up again.
Q: Do I need to be a strong swimmer?
A: Basic swimming ability is required as a safety precaution, though you won't be swimming during the activity itself.
Practicalities
Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes, covering cold-water activities, wildlife excursions, and boat trips. Medical evacuation coverage is also recommended.
Q: Are meals included?
A: Breakfast is provided daily. Lunch and dinner are not included, leaving you free to explore Churchill's restaurants.
Q: Is there internet?
A: Wi-Fi is available at the accommodation. Cellular coverage exists in town itself, but expect it to weaken or disappear once you're out on the water or the tundra.
Other Experiences
Q: Can we add anything extra to this trip?
A: Yes. A half-day on a Tundra Buggy, the specialized vehicle built for close-range bear viewing, or a half-day zodiac charter dedicated to searching for polar bears from the water, can both be arranged as add-ons, surcharge applies.
Q: Can I extend my trip?
A: Yes, our 8-day version adds an extra beluga session, an extra tundra afternoon, and a half-day historic tour.
