Wildlife Encounters
Q: Will we definitely see marlins?
A: The Marlin Run is one of the most reliable places on Earth to observe striped marlins hunting in large numbers. Sightings are extremely frequent during the October–December season, but these are wild animals in an open ocean environment, so encounters can never be guaranteed. What we can say is that this area and timing offer some of the highest probabilities anywhere.
Q: What exactly is the Marlin Run?
A: The Marlin Run is a seasonal phenomenon where striped marlins gather offshore Baja California Sur to hunt massive bait balls. This creates intense, fast-paced surface action, often involving multiple marlins at once, sometimes alongside dolphins, sea lions, and seabirds.
Q: Will we enter the water with the marlins?
A: Yes, when conditions allow. Encounters happen from the boat, and in suitable situations participants may enter the water to observe the action from a safe distance. All decisions are made by the guide based on sea state, animal behavior, and safety considerations.
Q: What other marine life might we see?
A: In addition to striped marlins, it’s common to see dolphins, sea lions, tuna, seabirds, and occasionally whales passing through the area. The ecosystem is extremely rich during this period.
Logistics
Q: Where does the expedition start and end?
A: The expedition starts and ends in La Paz. Private round-trip transportation from La Paz to the operational area is included.
Q: How many days are spent on the water?
A: The expedition includes 3 full ocean safari days, with approximately 6–8 hours per day spent searching for and observing marlin activity.
Q: How big is the group?
A: To keep the experience safe, flexible, and low-impact, the group is limited to a maximum of 6 participants plus the guide.
Gear & Preparation
Q: Do I need freediving or scuba certification?
A: No certification is required. This is not a technical diving experience. You should be comfortable swimming in open water and following instructions in a dynamic marine environment.
Q: Is this trip physically demanding?
A: This is considered an easy to moderate expedition. Participants should be comfortable spending long days on a small boat, moving in and out of the water when conditions allow, and handling some chop or wind. No advanced fitness level is required.
Q: What should I wear or bring?
A: Lightweight layers, sun protection, and a wetsuit appropriate for water temperatures (typically 3–5 mm depending on the month). A detailed packing list will be provided after booking.
Practicalities
Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory and must cover boat-based activities and marine wildlife encounters.
Q: Are meals included?
A: Lunch, snacks, water, and soft drinks are included during ocean days. Breakfasts and dinners are not included unless otherwise specified, allowing flexibility to explore local restaurants.
Q: What is the accommodation like?
A: Accommodation is based on double occupancy for 4 nights. Details vary depending on final logistics and will be confirmed before departure.
Other Experiences
Q: What kind of boats are used?
A: We operate with fast, open motorboats designed for offshore wildlife observation, allowing rapid repositioning and close monitoring of marlin activity.
Q: Can this trip be combined with other Baja experiences?
A: Yes. Since the expedition is based in La Paz, it can easily be combined with other Baja California Sur experiences, such as sea lion encounters, whale watching, or scuba diving in Cabo Pulmo. Contact us to tailor an extension.
