Moderate

You should be prepared for long travel days driving on gravel roads, with some journeys lasting several hours, and for adapting well to harsh climate conditions and camping life. The Pontok hike and the Big Daddy hike are physically demanding and require good stamina, but are not mandatory.

From June to September, Namibia experiences its dry winter season, which is generally the best time to travel this route.
Expect warm days (28-32 °C / 82–90 °F) in the interior desert regions, with cooler mornings and evenings (5–15 °C / 41–59 °F), especially in the Namib and Damaraland. Along the coastal areas, including Swakopmund and Sandwich Harbour, temperatures are cooler, around 15–20 °C / 59–68 °F during the day, and 5–10 °C (41–50 °F at night, with frequent fog and rain showers. The climate is dry throughout the country, making it ideal for safaris, dune exploration, and desert trekking.

Clothing & Footwear

  • Lightweight, breathable clothing for hot and dry desert conditions
  • Warm layer (fleece and light down jacket) for cool mornings and evenings, especially in the Namib and Damaraland
  • Light long-sleeve shirts and trousers for sun protection and to guard against dust and insects
  • Windbreaker or light waterproof jacket for occasional coastal fog or drizzle
  • Sturdy walking/hiking shoes with good grip for dunes, rocky terrain, and desert hikes
  • Comfortable sandals or flip-flops for downtime at campsites
  • Hat and sunglasses for sun protection, especially during desert excursions

Gear & Accessories

  • Sunscreen (high SPF, water-resistant)
  • Hat & sunglasses
  • Daypack for hikes, safaris, and daily excursions
  • Headlamp (useful for early morning or evening desert walks, with spare batteries)
  • Reusable water bottle (hydration is essential in dry climates)
  • Insect repellent (especially in northern areas and near waterholes)
  • Binoculars for wildlife viewing in Etosha and along the coast

Travel Essentials

  • Travel insurance covering 4x4 driving, desert trekking, and wildlife activities
  • Power plug adapter for Namibia (Type D / Type M sockets, 220–240 V)
  • Power bank for charging devices on long drives and remote areas

Q: Do I need to be fit to join?
A: You should be comfortable with long travel days of driving on gravel roads, and setting up the rooftop tents. There’s two hikes on non-technical terrain, so moderate fitness is enough, and the hikes are not mandatory.

Q: What kind of wildlife will we see?
A: Namibia is one of the best places in Africa to spot lions, leopards, cheethas, elephants, rhinos, giraffes and a variety of antelope species, but wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. That’s part of the adventure, our experienced guides and carefully chosen waterholes will give you the best possible chance.

Q: Will there be Wi-Fi?
A: Most campsites have Wi-Fi, though speeds can vary. Mobile data coverage is good in towns and turistic hotspots while non existant in remote areas, and local SIM cards are inexpensive.

Q: Do I need a visa for Namibia?
A: Yes, you need a visa. Visa on Arrival: Available at major ports of entry, including Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek. The visa fee is approximately N$1,600 (around €80). This visa is valid for up to 90 days. Online Application: You can apply for a visa online through Namibia’s official e-Visa portal. The process is secure and allows you to track your application status.

Q: What's the food look like?
A: Expect hearty meat dishes, fresh vegetables, maize-based sides, and local specialties like biltong (dried cured meat) and potjiekos (slow-cooked stew). Namibian food is generally mild, but spices and sauces are available to taste. Vegetarian and vegan options are possible in lodges and campsites, though menus can be limited in remote areas.

Q: Is travel insurance required?
A: Yes. Comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory for participation. Your policy must cover medical expenses, emergency evacuation, and all activities included in the trip, such as safaris and hiking. Proof of coverage will be requested before departure.

Q: Can I extend my trip?
A: Absolutely! We offer optional extensions like the ghost town of Kolmanskop. Just contact us for more information.
